32km, 8 hours

Today, after a steady two hour climb, we reached the highest point on the official Te Araroa trail: Stag Saddle at 1928m (6325ft). We climbed higher still, onto an adjacent ridge line.

The views here were of the main divide, Mt. Cook loomed in the distance, massive at 3724m, entirely glacier and snow capped.

Off the ridge line, we view Lake Tekapo, in all the shades of cold blue you can imagine. It’s fed by glacial melt and so the silt and minerals suspended in the water give it a neon blue luminescence.

From there it’s a long, dusty, dirt road into town. We’ve had a lot of those lately.
